The last wave of summer

I was testing the last Photoshop brushes I've made, when this wave came. It seems to me the last wave of summer.

And to say goodbye properly at summer, I give you a small collection of my favorite brushes, made by myself. Enjoy them!!

The fly is waiting...

Miguel Barceló, in his book "Notebooks of Africa", tells:
"The sheep eat my shits, but not the toilet paper (...) While I have a shit, the sheep staring at me and waits until I ends".

Today, a fly stared at me for hours; leaning on my hand, my leg, my nose, on the keyboard, the table, on the computer screen... And I was wonder... ¿What is it waiting? while a terribly suspicion lurked me. I was remembering the sheep and painter from Mallorca.

In the end, seems that the fly only wanted to see a human make an illustration. As soon I saved and closed the document, the fly is gone.

An illustrator not only make drawings. We keep secrets most times. In fact, on this moment that I am writing, I keep, like the selfish giant, four secrets, maby five, or six. Only from time to time, I leave a little clue.

We keep the secrets jealously, with affection, with emotion. We care about the secrets, and we feed them, until they are ready for explore the world. I'ts a small point in common with the profession of spy or secret agent. Isn't exciting?

Dive into the idea

One of first to do when we illustrate, is finding the *idea. Every illustrated page starts with a small scketch (one or two inches to avoid excess of detail)

The first concept fo one illustration almost seems fabulous, but often it's only the tip of the iceberg. And worth diving into it. Then, I draw at least three or four scketches. Sometimes, the first idea is the best, but the most of the time, in some of subsequents concepts, pop-up an original and unexpected point of view, that it's the result of these alternative searches.

*TIP: captures the ideas quickly on notebook, paper towel, or similar to not lose them.

To be an illustrator, you must notice everything around. So, occasionally, you are able to find true gems of everyday life. Not long ago, I could see two peculiar, fantastic women. I'm sure that sooner or later they'll be a history characters.

Valentine turtle, step by step

1. First scketch

2. First little study of lights and shadows

3. Base tones.

4. Start the illumination.

5. More lights and shadows. I'm like pink hearts. They have a soft light that reflex on character. The turtle has blush on it cheeks.

6. The plants frame turtle to center attention on it. I think is better a small smile.

7. Give volume to the hearts. It's almost done!

8. And at the end, a little Moon cold light. Finish!

Illustrators always carry a notebook. There are in a lot of sizes. When I started, I alwais carry a huge notebook. Those notebooks had two handred pages at least. I'm not a supersize woman, and I relized that a small notebook was best for my back. Now, I only use pocketsize notebooks, like moleskine.

Also, sometimes I make by myself little notebooks with lightweight papers. They are so crappy, but they are good for take scketches.

You can see below one of this crappy notebooks, some scketches I take in Madrid Zoo, and scketches from two kittys what were born on my building garage roof. I could no resist! They were so cute!!
